SA Leadership Podcast Episode #033

Staying Mission True

Mission True organizations understand the Gospel demands excellence in their work!

Tucked away in a corner of America is Post Falls, Idaho. Buck_Knives_logo This area is renowned for its outdoor recreation. It is also the home of Buck knives. In 1902 Hoyt Buck forged his first knife at age 13. Even then Hoyt believed that his Christian faith demanded excellence – “as unto the Lord” he would say.

Hoyt became a pastor and simply tinkered with knives on the side. America entered WWII in 1941 and a call for weapon donations went out for American soldiers. In that moment Hoyt decided to become bi-vocational. He crafted over 2000+ knives and donated them to the soldiers. From that beginning H.H. Buck Knives was born making about 5 knives per day in 1940.

Mission True organizations not only hold themselves to the highest standards because of their Christian identity, but they also recognize their contributions they are uniquely able to to make in the world because of being faith-based.

Consider some of the following examples of excellence –

  • Taylor University – has been ranked number one in the category of Best Regional Colleges five years in a row by U.S. News & World Report
  • Youth For Christ created an anti-bullying program that went national in the school systems of our nation
  • Compassion International sponsors more children that other organizations of the world
  • Prison Entrepreneurship Program program has demonstrated a dramatic decrease in the recidivism rate after teaching ex-convicts with business training
  • Project 1.27, an adoption ministry founded by Colorado Community Church has helped 243 foster children find “forever homes” with Christian familiesMission True OrganizationsThe Gospel of Jesus Christ is integrated holistically into Mission True Organizations. This effort is not an afterthought. The Gospel reorients everything. There are four key facets to consider:

    1. Maintain the highest levels of quality – “Poor quality” and “Christian” should never used in the same sentence to describe your organization. Substandard work is not God honoring. People do not support AVERAGE! Stay focus on the fact that your work is unto the Lord and not human masters!

    2. Celebrate their unique societal contributions because of their Christian identity – Embrace your Christian distinctiveness and the various ways that you can make a unique contribution in the place of your influence.

    3. Integrate the Gospel into al areas of their programs – No area of an organization is left untouched by Christian principles – no subject of operations is off limits to the influence of Christ. Products, goods & services, strategies and physical space is saturated in Gospel principles.

    4. Excellence – Regardless of the type of work that you do, our faith in the Gospel message is too important to settle for mediocrity. Our faith demands “best in class” effort.

Do You Measure What Matters?

Nordstrom’s teaches us that in order to achieve the full mission purpose of your organization you have to be deliberate in what you evaluate. The old business mantra, “What gets measured gets done,” is still true! We might to that mantra; “What is not measured slowly becomes irrelevant!”

If your organization is going to remain Mission True, then we must take serious our definition of success and the tools by which we gain our information. There are no “absolute” tools available. All have some problems on some level.

A study was done on the missionaries of Haiti. The missionary newsletters were collected and various ministries that were working throughout the country. What they discovered from these newsletters was that the entire population of Haiti would be saved every three years.

Something was obviously wrong in the measuring of success!

Mission and Measurement Go Together

What happens to your organization concludes that close enough is good enough? In the same way that a home has structural beams that frame a home, metrics show the soundness of the structure.

A key issue is “Are asking the correct questions that reveals that our activity is mission driven or driving us away from our purpose. In order to comprehend this thought an evaluation of how our metrics are being structured to assist us in the measuring of important data.

Paul Penley of “Excellence in Giving” a philanthropic advisory firm has established some basic YES/NO questions to begin measuring what matters.

YES/NO Self Analysis

1.Have we translated our mission into specific and measurable goals?

2.Are we asking those we serve whether programs are effective and having an impact?

3.Are we measuring program outcomes against benchmarks or averages?

4.Have we completed independent evaluation of program outcomes?

5.Do we use an internal scorecard to track key performance indicators?

Mission True Metrics

To start this segment we must give credit where credit’s due. Growth should be filled with gratitude for what God is doing. God is the one that makes it grow!

Here is a simply four-step process to keep balance in our reporting and measuring.

1.Make an effort to measure more than the easy stuff. Holistic measurements are more meaningful to the people that are assisting us.

2.Identify ways that measurement can lead you away from mission purpose.

3.Believe that measuring something is better than measuring nothing.

4.Admit it is a TEAM effort – not a solo production!

Follow The Money

It is said that Andrew Carnegie single-handedly changed the face of modern education. With ten million plus dollars to donate, He stated in his letter of gift that institutions that required adhering to a prescribed doctrinal statement or were under religious governance would be excluded from receiving any money.

It is amazing how organizations will rationalize their purposes to be the recipient of large donations. Brown University was the first university to break ties with the Baptist association in order to receive money. Dartmouth University would be the next in line to get their check. Even Oberlin College where Charles Finney served as President for decades would receive the money. Charles Finney was the evangelist of the 2nd Great Awakening that led thousands of converts to Christ.

Financial incentives are a powerful force in allowing Mission Drift to occur.

Consider the “Feed My Starving Children” charitable fund that drifted away from their Christian roots and began to soft-pedal their faith in hopes to gain more donors. With an annual budget of $830,000 and a hand full of staff they knew they were headed in the wrong direction. They acknowledged they had a work that was good, a model that worked, and there was a demand for their service. But in a board meeting they declared they did not have God.

They declared an open dedication service for renewal and recommitment to Christian values a purposes. Within 9 years they went from $830,000 to $35 million.

Money is not everything if it causes you to sacrifice the core of your faith foundations.

Mission True Donors

Mission True organizations need donors who have complete buy-in. God can do amazing things with and through people who link themselves to support important causes. There are five things to say about Mission True donors:

1. Are explicit in their expectations – by creating clear guidelines and a plan for your giving you “memorialize” your values and intent.

2. Plan Ahead – Estate planning and bequests open up important family discussions and intent for family legacy.

3. Keep “Mission Strings” attached – keep missional purposes and intentions in mind and build safe-guards around that giving.

4. Do Your Giving While You’re Living – while you are still alive and in control is the best time to give.

5. Pray and Encourage the Organizations That Are Important

True Leadership

Mission True leaders set the cultural tone for the organization.

  • A few years ago Dr. J. Robert Clinton, Fuller Seminary Professor revealed some shocking information regarding biblical leaders.
  • He found that only one in three maintained a dynamic relationship with God and did not abuse his/her power.
  • Proverbs 4:23 comes to mind; “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
  • The heart of the leader is not only a wellspring of life, but the wellspring of organizational health. There is no faster way for an organization to get off mission or lose it’s credibility than through a fallen leader. It could not happen to me!Dr. Howard Hendricks of Dallas Theological Seminary interviewed 246 individuals who had committed sexual immorality within a two year period of time. Dr. Hendricks sought to determine key factors that led to this behavior. All 246 individuals believe they were incapable of committing their moral failure.
    • If you believe that you are immune, then you are most vulnerable. All 246 individuals had stopped their daily tie with the Lord. None had an accountability partner.
    • Even if a leader does not fall publicly, a leader whose heart is not rooted in Christ and actively growing can be just as devastating to a ministry. Jesus stated; “Apart from me you can do nothing.” Not, you can do a little bit. The emphasis is on nothing.
    • Leaders that are not grounded in prayer and spiritual disciplines are leaders that are susceptible to Mission Drift.
      • You know that you are headed for trouble when you declare, “I’ll spend more time with Christ when my INBOX is empty.”
      • Incremental, slow, personal mission creep often leads to organizational mission creep.
      • Mission True leaders not growing in Christ lead their organizations with feet on shaky ground.
      • Author Brennan Manning of the Ragamuffin Gospel, stated that the greatest idol within leaders is AMBITION. The desire for success and growth can lead to some pretty dangerous situations for both leader ad organization.
      • Jim Collins of How The Mighty Fall, states that a company’s destruction is “hubris born of success.” Pride can lead to the wrong definition of success.
      • Collins would write that self-centeredness may lead to short-term success but it often undermines an organization long-term.

Mission True Leaders

1.Admit vulnerability – Never forget your own sinfulness – the stakes are too high

2.Invite others in – Allow people in your life to speak frankly and candidly. These leaders welcome the challenge of accountability

3.Create safeguards against impropriety

4.Remain connected to Christ – with Him you can do NOTHING!

Face The Drift - Build Safeguards

6 Safeguards To Remain Mission True

1. Remain mindful of cultural trends – Recognize cultural shifts, become a student of trending. This will give insight to guardrails that you need to build.

2. Do not assume successor’s will inherit the founders vision – Founders must be diligent in training and educating the next generation. You cannot afford to assume anything.

3. Attend to the details in constructing safeguards – Keeping procedures as simple as possible. Simplicity tends to outlive even the founders. Complexity is impressive but can cause a number of deviations from the original intention.

4. Know why you exist – If you cannot articulate in writing your reason for existing, you are only day-dreaming about who you are and what your purposes are.

5. Be able to differentiate between means and mission – Know the boundaries on what you will concede and what you will not.

6. Change only to strengthen the core mission – Change for the sake of it is not a good reason to do anything. Only pursue change when it will assist you in strengthening the core mission and its implementation.

Keeping The Board Mission True – 5 Considerations

1.Recruit Prayerfully and Carefully – In the show notes I am providing a sample nomination form to consider future potential board members.

2.Hold the Chief Executive Officers responsible for the mission of the organization and maintaining the core of the mission.

3.Follow standard Board Practices – The Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability is a great starting point to protect the missional direction of the organization.

4.Create Policies and Safeguards that tie the hands of successors to the core distinctives of the organization and why they are important.

5.Remember the mission – not only should the history be reviewed from time to time, but the officers need to live out the principles and core values of the organization.

Remaining Mission - How To Stop The Drift

Death By Minnows Unknown-1

In February 1993 Albert Mohler became the 9th President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. With an effigy hanging outside the window of the chapel, Dr. Mohler took the podium an began to announce his intentions as the newest President of a drifting seminary. Here is what he read:

Let those who would understand Southern Seminary understand this:…That this Abstract is a sacred contract and confession for those who teach here – who willingly and willfully affix their signatures to its text and their conscience to its intention. They pledge to teach “in accordance with and not contrary to its precepts.

Unknown  Steve Haas, Vice President of World Vision stated, “Getting eaten by a whale or nibbled to death by minnows results in the same thing. One demise is typically more difficult to diagnose.”

Protecting from Drift

It seems that protecting your organization is a daily exercise that must be taken serious. According to authors Greer and Horst there are two common variables to pay attention too:

1.Clarity of Christian Mission

2.Intentionality In Safeguarding It

The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics

This law states that energy proceeds in the same manner based upon the influencers impacting it. Therefore, if faith-based organizations do not infuse their mission intentions regularly with prayer and intentional management steps, the gravitational pull of secularization will be unstoppable.

One of the biggest barriers is “PAIN AVOIDANCE!” We would rather do the easy work first as opposed to the difficult work that is challenging our mission purpose and future.

Closing Actions Steps

1.Seek Clarity First – Map your destination!

2.Acknowledge that the pressure of drift is constant. Breathe the Mission daily.

3.Realize there is a point of NO RETURN! No one is exempt from this extreme – not even Harvard or Yale University.

4.Make the hard decisions to correct the drift. Pain avoidance is the fastest way for Mission Drift to devastate an organization’s Christ-centered identity.

Remaining Mission True - How To Stop The Drift

Defining what is “Mission True” WARNING-_this_sign_is_only_a_distraction_Wallpaper_pcwfi

“In the simplest form, Mission True organizations know why they exist and protect their core at all costs. They remain faithful to what they believe God has entrusted them to do. They define what is immutable: their values and purposes, their DNA, their heart and soul.” [Mission Drift p.27].

Remaining Mission True is to adapt and grow, so long as that adaptation and growth does not alter the core identity. Mission True organizations decide that their identity matters and then become fanatically focused on remaining faithful to that core.

The key in this process is not based upon a charismatic leader. If that were true then drift would occur within the second generation of the organization.

What Is The Core Distinction?

  • According to the American Enterprise Institute religious people are 25 percentage points more likely than secularists to donate money and 23 percentage points more likely to volunteer time.
  • Christians understand the importance of Good Samaritanism. The key concern is that we should remember that we are more than “world class humanitarians, we are CHRISTIANS!
  • With that said, is Christianity nothing more than serving hands and willing checkbooks. Do we really believe that Christ is the difference?
  • So that I am not mistaken, we must do good while we share GOOD NEWS! Do we believe this good news still matters? Do we believe that this is the best Good News the world has ever heard? I would suggest that a commitment to this good news is precisely what keeps us on mission!

Our Most Precious Asset

Christian leaders are often quiet about the crisis in our boardrooms and hiring practices and fundraising strategies. It seems there is a gravitational pull of secularization coming at us from all sides, beckoning us to abandon this “Jesus Stuff” and focus on the more practical side of life.

If we continue to apologize for our faith, conceal its importance and drift from its core, we will lose the very uniqueness our world desperately needs. There are three things that mission true organizations do:

1.Recognize that Christ is the difference. Education and the latest technologies are not enough to transform hearts and lives. Without a heart change prosperity can lead to brokenness.

2.Affirm that faith affirms them. Authors Stein and Barnett assert in their book Sacred Aid, that faith gives organizations endurance, often making them more effective than their secular counterparts. Faith is what keeps your face into the winds of difficulty and you press forward in perseverance.

3.Understand that functional atheism is the path of least resistance. What do I mean by that statement? Functional atheism is a belief that Christian works over Christian messaging is what makes the difference. This will lead organizations to become Christian in name only. I referenced journalist Matthew Paris admitting that he does not believe in God and yet admits at the same time that his approach to problem solving in the world is insufficient. As a Christian nonprofit I must be reminded that my works flow out of a transformed life in Christ. His message has changed me first and then my works flow out of that testimony.

We are in danger as Christian nonprofits if we abandon Jesus Christ, we will lose everything. Ironically, by submitting everything to Jesus it may in fact appear that we are going to lose everything simply because the drum beat of society is so anti-Christian at this point in history.

SA Leadership Podcast Episode #026

Remaining Mission True - How To Stop The Drift

Consider Two Facets of Drift…

1.There is the possibility that drift can occur right under your nose on your watch. This happens when you take your eye off of the missional purpose in the organization/church that you serve. The remedy here is a profound humility and accountability. It would be helpful to remind all of us that leaders fail many times at the height of their success – when everything is going well.

2.There is an institutional drift that can occur after your watch and direct influence has ended. Institutional humility is needed here to cause officers and other leaders to bow in humility while keeping a gentle spirit about the founding missional ideas that brought the organization into existence in the first place. What are the uncompromising core values no matter the leader?

WARNING-_this_sign_is_only_a_distraction_Wallpaper_pcwfiConsider this mission statement of an extremely well known university: To be plainly instructed and consider well that the main end of your life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ.

  • This school was founded in 1636 and employed only Christian Professors.
  • Today Harvard University’s mission statement does not sound anything like it’s original: To become a Pastoral Training School.
  • On the diploma’s there is a vestige – Christo et Ecclesiae Vertias meaning Truth of Christ and the Church.
  • At the 350th Anniversary of Harvard, Steven Muller, former president of John Hopkins University did not mince words: “The bad news is the university has become godless!
  • Larry Summers President at the time, was there to hear these words acknowledged that things divine were not part of his professional or personal life.

It only took 80 years for Harvard to drift. Because of this drift another university was born whose motto became: Lux et Vertias meaning LIGHT and TRUTH! – Yale University.

Are we adrift?

In a survey of Christian leaders at the Q Conference in Los Angles in 2013, 95% said that remaining mission true was a challenging issue to faith-based nonprofit organizations.

Key questions to ask…

  • Are financial metrics the only measurement for gauging organizational health? How do you measure holistic transformation of individuals?
  • How do you formally assess whether board members joining your organization have fully bought into your full mission purpose?
  • How do you measure your staff’s growing and vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ?
  • How are you presently discipling and encouraging spiritual growth in your officers and leaders?
  • Are you truly incorporating your beliefs into the culture of operations? Most organizations do not willingly, consciously, and intentionally change directions to accelerate their drift. Most Christian organizations have not intentionally softened their distinctives. Harvard or Yale University did not hold a “Mission Drift Celebration Day where they mapped out their new softened position. Is remaining mission true impossible? Can we stop the drift while professionalizing ourselves?

Why Time Management Is An Oxymoron

Today’s GROWTH Gives Me Potential

Misconceptions about Growth

  • People think that growth is automatic. If you do not take responsibility for our growth plan it will never occur.
  • People think that growth comes before information. The greatest hindrance to growth is not ignorance. It is the illusion of knowledge.
  • People think that growth comes with experience. Failing to hit the bulls eye is never is never the problem of the bulls eye – it is always the person. “Who will be the matter with me today?”

Consider these four reasons why growth matters today…

1. Gifting without growth leads to ineffectiveness. Nobody is so good they do not need to sharpen their skills with continual learning. When you place a premium on growth you take whatever talent you have and increase it. You not only become more effective today, but tomorrow as well

2. Growth prevents personal and professional stagnation. Stagnation is a sign that internal changes need to occur. You cannot always control the externals of life. You can control the internals of life by means of thoughts and determination.

3. Your personal growth impacts your organization’s growth. In order to do more I’ve got to be more – Jim Rohn. If you are not growing you will become the lid that holds your organization down.

4. Only through continuous improvement can you reach your potential. If you do not attempt to improve yourself everyday – this could be your fate. You will be stuck doing the same things, the same way, believing that things will improve.

QUESTION: What is my potential?

The greatest handicap that a person can have in life is to not realize their potential in life. What dreams do you have that are unfulfilled? What gifts and talents are waiting to come and be expressed within you?

The gap between your vision and your present reality can only be filled through a commitment to maximize your potential.

  • Make a commitment to change.
  • Set growth goals – if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there. If you aim at nothing you will hit every time.
  • Put yourself in a growth environment. Quite looking for the hand-outs and freebies in life. Put some skin in the game! Things that are free are not appreciated. How do you manage growth?1.Make is a habit to grow on some level daily2.Have a personal growth plan1.Listen to good audio/video teaching every week

2.Read at least 2 books per month

3.Set an appointment with yourself for purposes of growth – meet new people!

4.File what you have learned. Do not let it lay in an unorganized pile.

    5.Apply what you have learned.

Does TODAY MATTER? By now you surely have come to the same conclusion that I have. I cannot create time and I am not going to manage it. Therefore, time management is an OXYMORON!

SA Leadership Podcast Episode #024

Why Time Management Is An Oxymoron

Today’s Values Give Me Direction

Why Values Matter Today

  • George Lorimer once editor of the Saturday Evening Post stated, “Back of every life there are principles that have fashioned it.”
  • I believe these principles are the “LIFE VALUES” that are the beacons of light guiding our daily direction. They are the core values of our being.
  • They are an anchor. There will always be rough times in life, how will you find direction? Without a core center you are left to drift in life. Any size storm is a threat to your aliveness!
  • They are a faithful friend. Your core values are the deeply held beliefs that authentically describe your soul. President Lincoln stated that when he lays down the reigns of this administration he wanted to have one friend left and that friend was inside of him.
  • They are you North Star. Your life is always changing in terms of learning and acquiring skills that you never had before. However, your values never change. They are a dependable guide.

Let’s review the journey of this series of podcasts and you will find they are based upon core values of the author. When restated they sound like this…

1. I value my attitude because it gives me possibilities

2. I value my priorities because they give me focus

3. I value my health because it gives me strength

4. I value my family because it gives me stability

5. I value my thinking because it gives me an advantage

6. I value my commitment because it gives me tenacity

7. I values my finances because they give me options

8. I value my faith because it gives e peace

9. I value my relationships because they are my fulfillment

10.I value my generosity because it gives me significance

11.I value my values because they give me direction

12.I value my growth because it gives me potential

Make the decision to embrace and practice good values daily!

  • Determine to be God’s man/woman – no matter where you go in life determine to stay in the center of God’s will in all things.
  • Determine to develop my potential to the best of my ability – rebuke laziness and indifference in your life. Be prepared to assist the spiritual lost in life.
  • Determine to be a true spiritual leader – I determine to not be poured into another man’s mold and speak what I do not believe.

Your core values may alienate you from others but never yourself!

Create a list of GREAT VALUES

Write out a list of values. Remember your values should not be determined by externals such as your profession or our environment. Take some time to ponder your list of every possible value idea that comes to mind. Spend a week or more prayerfully considering this list. Get your spouse involved in the discussion about this list.

Embrace the good values that have emerged from your effort and discussion. Clarifying and embracing your list of values will help you from leaning your ladder against the wrong wall in life.

Physicist Albert Einstein stated, “Try not to become men of success. Rather become men of value.” Articulate and embrace your values daily! Live out your values regardless of how you feel – do not compromise. Successful people do what is right no matter how they feel!
