SA Leadership Podcast Episode #013

TODAY MATTERS – Why Time Management Is An Oxymoron!

We generally believe that good “Time Management” practices will lead to a life of success. The problem lies in our misconception of what success really is. Each day falls apart for people for one of the following 9 reasons:

1.We simply do not believe that success is possible. M. Scott Peck in his book The Road Less Traveled begins by stating “Life Is Difficult!” He would go on to say that most people do not fully see this truth….rather they moan more or less incessantly…about the enormity of their problems, their burdens and their difficulties as if life were generally easy, as if it should be easy.

2.We believe that success is mystical so we search for it. Seth Godin in his book Permission Marketing stated that we need to stop shopping for lightening bolts…You do not become an Olympic gold medal winner with a few intensive days of training.

3.We believe that success comes from being lucky so we hope for it.

4.We believe that success is productivity so we work for it. Hard work and success are not one in the same.

5.We believe that success comes form the right opportunity so we are willing to wait for it. John Wooden stated that when an opportunity comes, it is too late to prepare!

6.We believe that success comes from leverage so we engage in power displays. Industrial Capitalist Andrew Carnegie stated that success is the power with which to acquire whatever one demands of life without violating the rights of others.

7.We believe that success comes from connections so we work hard at our networking skills. Question: Which is more important in getting what you want in life, who you know or what you know?

8.We believe that success comes from recognition so we are always striving for the public notoriety. We often confuse the recognition of success as success!

9.We believe that success is an event so we constantly for more and more events. We overestimate the event and underestimate the process.

SA Leadership Podcast Episode #012

This “Special Edition” Podcast is an interview with Dr. Ken Finch, Licensed Mental Health Counselor. There are a number of significant insights that Dr. Finch gives regarding the overall health of spiritual leaders. Below are some of the topics that were discussed and links on how to contact Dr. Finch and other associations.

PTSD – once called shell shock or battle fatigue syndrome, is a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occurred or was threatened. Click HERE for additional information on this important topic that can affect ministers.

Compassion Fatigue – Studies confirm that caregivers play host to a high level of compassion fatigue. Day in, day out, workers struggle to function in care giving environments that constantly present heart wrenching, emotional challenges. Affecting positive change in society, a mission so vital to those passionate about caring for others, is perceived as elusive, if not impossible. This painful reality, coupled with first-hand knowledge of society’s flagrant disregard for the safety and well being of the feeble and frail, takes its toll on everyone from full time employees to part time volunteers. Eventually, negative attitudes prevail. Click HERE for further insight on this topic.

Burnout – is a state of chronic stress that leads to: physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment.

SA Leadership Podcast Episode #011

Shepherds Advantage Leadership Podcasts are designed to provoke and stir the imagination to greater leadership capabilities. These podcasts are targeted toward non-profit leaders aim to Empower With Hope!

These inaugural podcast episodes are laying the foundation for everything that Shepherds Advantage will offer. “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell is being used because of it’s comprehensive list. There simply is no other list that covers the depth and breadth of foundational laws of leading. There is an affiliate link below to purchase the book and a companion workbook.

In this podcast we will focus on:

The Law of Explosive Growth

To Add Growth, Lead Followers – To Multiply, Lead Leaders

Consider the following 7 comparisons:

  1. Leaders who attract followers need to be needed

Leaders who develop leaders want to be successful

  • You may feel important and needed, but that is a shallow reason to pursue leadership in any organization
  1. Leaders who attract followers develop the bottom 20%

Leaders who develop leaders develop the top 20%

  • The weakest in your organization to dominate 80% of your time. The best leaders invest 80% of their time in the best among them for a far greater return
  1. Leaders who attract followers focus on weaknesses

Leaders who develop leaders focus on strengths

  • The bottom 20% struggle with their weaknesses continually. However when you invest yourself in the top performers you build on their strengths.
  1. Leaders who attract followers treat everyone the same

Leaders who develop leaders treat individuals differently

  • “For the sake of fairness” produces more goof-off’s than leaders. Reward achievement thus raising the bar of quality and accomplishment.
  1. Leaders who attract followers spend time with others

Leaders who develop leaders invest time in others

  • This is an issue of “being liked” versus developing other people to achieve.
  1. Leaders who attract followers grow by addition

Leaders who develop leaders grow by multiplication

  • Add 10 followers to your organization and you have the power of 10 people. Add 10 leaders to your organization and you have the power of 10 leaders times all of the followers and leaders they influence.
  1. Leaders who attract followers impact only people they touch

Leaders who develop leaders impact people beyond their reach

  • Developing followers is exhausting because you must focus on every single person that followers. However when you develop leaders your reach goes far beyond the personal touch. By developing one your influence the many!

The Law of Legacy

A Leaders Lasting Value Is Measure By Succession

If you had to write a “life sentence” that describes your purpose, what would you write? This goal in a sentence may shift in different seasons of life. Write it out today. Do not become like most people who simply accept their lives instead of leading it!

I would suggest 4 steps on working on your legacy:

  1. Know the legacy you want to leave
  2. Leave the legacy you want to leave
  3. Choose who will carry out your legacy
  4. Make sure you pass the baton

In this podcast we will focus on:

The Law of Sacrifice

The Leader Must Give Up To Go Up!

Sacrifice is the heart of leadership. There seems to be a misconception that leadership is all about the perks and privileges. Some tend to believe it is about obtaining power and freedom to do whatever whenever. At times we must agree that leadership positions can appear to be glamorous.

4 Truths To Consider:

  1. There is no success without sacrifice
  2. Leaders are often to give up more than others
  3. You must keep giving to stay up
  4. The higher the level of leadership the greater the sacrifice

The Law of Timing

When to lead is as important as what to do and where to go!

Every leadership action has one of 4 outcomes:

  1. The wrong action at the wrong time leads to disaster
  2. The right action at the wrong time brings resistance
  3. The wrong action at the right time is a mistake
  4. The right action at the right time results in success

The Law of Buy-In

People buy into the Leader, then the Vision!

Realize that as a leader YOU ARE THE MESSAGE! Every message is filtered by the people through the messenger that delivers it. People will go along with people they can get along with! Consider the following table

LEADER + VISION = RESULT
Don’t buy in Don’t buy in Get another leader
Don’t buy in Buy in Get another leader
Buy in Don’t buy in Get another vision
Buy in Buy in Get behind the leader

The Law of Victory

Leaders Find A Way For The Team To Win!

Winston Churchill stated – “What is our aim? I can answer in one word: VICTORY – victory at all costs, victory in spite of terror, victory however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there will be no survival” (21 Laws bk. p.181).

3 Components of Victory

  1. Unity of Vision – Victory is never achieved when working from different agendas.
  2. Diversity of Skills – Every team must have diversity of skills Every person has a contribution to make to the whole.
  3. A Leader dedicated to victory and raising others to their potential – great leaders help people reach their potential which is necessary for the team/organization to achieve victory.

SA Leadership Podcast Episode #007

The Law of Empowerment – 3 Barriers To Empowerment

  1. Desire for job security – The #1 enemy of empowering others to lead is the fear of loosing what we have.  A weak leader obsess over their subordinates taking over their job. “They will take my job if I help them succeed!”
  2. Resistance to change – John Steinbeck once asserted that as a man grows older he will protest against change even change for the better. It is a fact that humans for the most part do not like change. We have an incredible memory for how it used to be!
  3. Lack of self worth – A person that is self conscious rarely becomes a great leader. They always seems to obsess about themselves and their perception of what other people think about them.

Author Buck Rogers stated that people with self confidence will embrace change as a stimulus. They truly believe that one person can in fact make a difference.

The Law of The Picture

Great leaders are visionary and yet practical at the same time. They anticipate what is ahead and yet understand that today certain tasks must be accomplished. Consider:

  • MISSION provides purpose by answering the question of WHY?
  • VISION provides a picture answering the question WHAT?
  • STRATEGY provides a plan by answering the question HOW?

4 Key Insights of Effective Leading

  1. Followers are always watching what you do! It does not matter how many presentations, memos, or meetings that you offer, truthfully, if people do not see your best effort on behalf of the organization or their lives – they will not offer their best in return for you!
  2. It is easier to teach what is right than do what is right. Norman Vincent Peale said it best that nothing is more confusing to people that give advise whale setting a bad example!
  3. We should work on ourselves before attempting to improve others. You cannot lead where you have not walked. Start with your own plan of personal improvement.
  4. The most valuable gift that any leader can give others is the gift of a GOOD EXAMPLE! Leadership is truly more caught than taught!

In this episode we will focus upon:

The Law of Connection – 8 Guidelines

  1. CONNECT WITH YOURSELF – Do you really know yourself and do you really have the confidence within yourself to lead people?
  2. COMMUNICATE WITH OPENNESS AND SINCERITY – People can spot a phony.
  3. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE – Do you know people’s names, their history, their dreams? Learn to speak about the audience cares about not just what you care about!
  4. LIVE YOUR MESSAGE – Practice what you preach is still the best instruction that can be given.
  5. GO TO WHERE THEY ARE – Understand your audience’s culture, education, background, etc.
  6. FOCUS ON THEM, NOT YOURSELF – Your connection with people is not to impress them in terms of who you are, but to focus on your audience.
  7. BELIEVE IN THEM – It is one thing to communicate to people because you have something to say. It is another thing to communicate because you believe they have value!
  8. OFFER DIRECTION AND HOPE – Napoleon Bonaparte said it best – Leaders are dealers in hope! This gives people a future to believe in.

The Law of The Inner Circle

There are 5 things to consider when adding people to your inner circle.

  1. Does this person have high influence with others? If it gets lonely at the top, then take someone with you.
  2. Does this person bring a complimenting gift to the table?
  3. Does this person already hold a strategic position?
  4. Does this person add value to me as well as others around me?
  5. Does this person positively impact other inner circle members? You want this addition to be a good fit and then you want your inner circle to grow from each other.

  1. Leaders are readers of their situation
  2. Leaders are readers of trends
  3. Leaders are readers of their resources
  4. Leaders are readers of people
  5. Leaders are readers of themselves

The Law of Magnetism – 7 Criteria

  1. GENERATION – Most organizations reflect their key leaders and that includes their age.
  2. ATTITUDE – Rarely if ever will you see positive and negative people attracted to each other.
  3. BACKGROUND – People attract and are attracted to others of similar backgrounds.
  4. VALUES – People are attracted to other people whose values are similar. It does not matter whether these shared values are positive or negative.
  5. ENERGY – High energy people and low energy people can drive each other crazy. One believes the other is lazy and the other believes the one is insane.
  6. GIFTEDNESS – We are not in the business of looking for mediocrity people to join our team.
  7. LEADERSHIP ABILITY – We tend to bring people along side of us who are similar in their leadership styles. We do not usually go very far outside of our capabilities of performance and belief.

There simply is no other list that covers the depth and breadth of foundational laws of leading. There is an affiliate link below to purchase the book and a companion workbook.

In this episode we will focus upon:

The Law of Solid Ground – Trust is the foundation of leadership

  • How important is trust for a leader? It is the most important thing! TRUST is the foundation of leadership. It is the glue that holds organizations together. Leaders cannot repeatedly break trust with people and yet influence them at the same time.

3 Truths That Character Communicates

  1. Character Communicates Consistency
  2. Character Communicates Potential
  3. Character Communicates Respect

The only thing that walks back from the tomb with the mourners and refuses to be buried is the character of a man. What a man is survives him and it cannot be buried – J.R. Miller

The Law of Respect – People naturally follow leaders stronger than themselves

  • This is not a guessing game – people do not follow others by accident. People follow other leaders whom they respect. We simply tend to follow other leaders that are better than ourselves – that is the Law of Respect!
  • Dennis Peer states, “One measure of leadership is the caliber of people who choose to follow you.”. The second thing you should do is to see how your people respond when you ask for commitment or change.
  • When leaders are not respected and they ask for commitment or change, people will doubt and question the rationale and make excuses or simply walk away.
