Laws of Personal Growth

Growth Does Not just Happen – Life Is In Session Are you Present?

  • Being intentional in a growth strategy is not natural for many people. The real question is: “Do you have a plan to grow to your fullest potential? Can you articulate that vision of your fuller self by putting pen to paper? If not, then the old adage is true – we are only day dreaming if we cannot write it down.
  • What is the difference between goals and growing? The difference is one of intentionality!
  • There are a number of misconceptions about personal growth. John Maxwell has listed eight. Let us explore these together.1. I assume that I will automatically grow
    • If one assumes he/she will automatically grow, what is the likely outcome?
    • How can one know if they are growing or not?

    2. I do not know how to grow

    • Not knowing how to grow can be a powerful reason to simply not try to grow.
    • If one does not know how to grow, then one needs to ask those who do.

    3. It is not the right time to begin

    • What happens the longer we wait to begin our journey
    • List some of the reasons (excuses) one might offer for the timing of personal growth not being right4.I am afraid of making mistakes
      • Learning is not always a neat and clean pursuit in life
      • Mistakes are at times an indication that we are moving in the right direction

5.I have to find the best way before I start

      • You cannot wait until you have the perfect plan to begin anything or nothing ever will begin

6.I do not feel like doing it

      • You are more likely to act your way into a feeling instead of feeling you way into an action

7.Others are better than I am

      • There is always someone better than you!

8.I thought it would be easier than this

      • If Rome was not built in a day, how long are you willing to give yourself?

Make the transition to intentional growth

1.Ask the BIG question now

1.Where do you want to go in life?

2.What direction are you taking in life?

3.What is the farthest you can imagine going in life?

2.Do it NOW

1. The greatest danger facing you this very moment is that you are going to decide to reach your         full potential TOMORROW!

3. Face the FEAR factor

1.Fear of trading security for the Unknown

2.Fear of being overextended financially

3.Fear of what others will say or think

4. Fear of failing

5. Fear that success will alienate you from friends

4. Change from accidental to intentional growth

ACCIDENTAL GROWTH  INTENTIONAL GROWTH

Plans to start tomorrow                                       Insists on TODAY

Waits for growth to come                                    Takes responsibility for Growth

Learns only from mistakes                                  Learns before mistakes

Depends on good luck                                           Depends on hard work

Quits early and often                                             Perseveres long and hard

Falls into bad habits                                              Fights for good habits

Talks big                                                                     Follows through

Plays it safe                                                               Takes risks

Thinks like a victim                                               Thinks like a learner

Relies on talent                                                       Relies on character

Stops learning after graduation                     Never stops growing

Eleanor Roosevelt once stated – One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run we shape our lives and we shape ourselves!
