You Cannot Have The One Without The Other

Joseph Campbell once said that we cannot have a resurrection without a crucifixion.

Think about that for a moment.

If you want to be “resurrected” into the next, best version of yourself, you must first DIE to the current version.

And, last time I checked, crucifixions are painful.

It’s especially hard to nail (!) yourself up to your own cross.

But, alas, that’s what we MUST do if we want to live heroically. Brian Johnson writes that we must be willing to leave the land of the familiar (aka our comfort zone) and re-enter the forest of the unknown right at the darkest point (aka our discomfort zone) — letting go of the life we had planned for ourselves so we can create the life that is destined for us.

Campbell also tells us that the great life is one hero’s journey after another. Therefore, we must be willing to go through that process of dying to the old and being born into the new AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN.

Good news is that we get a little more graceful each time with go through the cycle. And, yet, the process is still always a little harrowing. As Campbell says, “There is no security in following the call to adventure.”

April 23, 1910, President Teddy Roosevelt gave a speech in Paris, France – “Man In The Arena.” Here is a quote worth applying daily to our lives.

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

You Need A Good Teacher or Coach

People who perform at the peak of their ability do so under the watchful eye of a great teacher. Great teaching causes people to learn by tailoring instruction to the students. A great teacher understands their students in terms of their creative or analytical tendencies. Said another way, they know when their students need a pat on the back of a kick in the pants.

Bring Your Best Effort

Andrew Carnegie suggested there is no use whatever trying to help people who do not help themselves. You cannot push anyone up a ladder unless he is willing to climb.

The great composer Duke Ellington simply stated, “Just give me your best.” Joe Theismann went to the Super Bowl twice. The first time they won and lost the second. Yet Joe has two rings that he wears. One to celebrate being a national winner and the other to remind him that you must bring your best at every opportunity.

Have A Clear Purpose

Don’t just practice, have a purpose for your practice. This requires establishing micro-goals for each practice session. Think of it this way, according to Professor Jon Johnston success bases our worth on a comparison with others. Excellence gauges our worth against our potential.

Potential

The great illustration here is Charles Dickens. Before he became a fiction writer he was already the best reporter in England. He was willing to take a chance and bet on himself as he searched for the best potential within himself. He became a world famous author. His passion was writing but his greatest passion was storytelling. Do not allow the standards of other people to keep you small. Your greatest fear should be that you will aim to low and hit it. Your potential is greater than someone’s small minded thinking.

The Right Resources

Even if you have done the previous four steps correctly, you can still fall short if you are not properly resourced for success.

General Patton was one of the most amazing Generals in the Allied Forces. He had the best of everything needed to fight a war. However, he lacked gasoline to power the instruments of war to fight against the Nazi’s. Resources are nothing more that tools needed to accomplish your purpose. Every human endeavor requires resources of some kind. In order to practice well, you need to be properly equipped.

Where Potentiality Becomes Actuality

if I had to summarize my entire philosophy in one sentence, one of Abraham Maslow’s gems coupled with The Apostle Paul would probably do the trick.

Maslow tells us: “What one can be, one must be.” The Apostle Paul tells us: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”This need to self-actualize is as real as our need to breathe.

Twenty-five hundred years earlier, Aristotle talked about the same idea. He actually coined a word for that force that’s driving us to actualize our innate potential. He called it “entelechy.”

Entelechy is made up of three little Greek words: en- ‘within’ + telos‘end, perfection’ + ekhein ‘be in a certain state.’

Entelechy. Literally: To be moving toward perfection.

Fast forward back to the 21st century and we have another preeminent psychologist chipping in to the discussion. Rollo May described the same force, only he made an important distinction in The Courage to Create where he tells us: “The acorn becomes an oak by means of automatic growth; no commitment is necessary. The kitten similarly becomes a cat on the basis of instinct. Nature and being are identical in creatures like them. But a man or woman becomes fully human only by his or her choices and his or her commitment to them. People attain worth and dignity by the multitude of decisions they make from day by day. These decisions require courage.” 

Back in the first century, entelechy  was not used in scripture but it certainly influenced spiritual debate.                1 Corinthians 15:36-38 certainly adds to the discussion of what is in the seed becomes actual when it is planted and produces its fruit with little to no thought of its’ on. Author May suggests that human fullness of life is experience by means of our choices. I would suggest that fullness of life is experienced when we address the God-shaped vacuum” that is within all of us.

Your full potential can be achieved by the choices you make every day. What is one choice that you need to make now!

This is about the depth of character in your innermost being. The definition of YOU is not based upon what you do, rather it is based upon who you are!

Re-certify Yourself Annually

You either are evolving or stagnating. Re-establishing your skill set by staying proactive instead of reactive.

Commit To A Personal Development Life Plan

You cannot lead where you have not walked! This journey begins with knowing yourself in order to grow yourself. Then others can be influenced by your growth.

Focus On Personal Disciplines

  • What are the disciplines that keep you on point?
  • Coach John Wooden would observe players for the first days of basketball camp to see where their sweet spot was for scoring. He would then put an “x” on the floor and state , “I will draw up a plan to get you in that sweet spot. Make sure that you show up.”

Learners Beat The Learned

In seasons of change learners inherit the earth, while the learned are frustrated by the world that has changed and their awareness of their lack or preparation!

Ask These Questions At The End of Every Day

  • What did I learn today?
  • How did I grow today?
  • What will I do differently?

The sub-title question; “Do You Want To Make More Money?sounds like a question that is asked on a late-night infomercial on how to become an overnight millionaire.  Author Steve Chandler in his book Wealth WARRIOR, asks the same question, Do You Want To Make More Money?. However in his book he answers the question with two profound words, SERVE MORE!“To understand why you are not making the money you want to make, I first want to see where you are not serving. That will give us our turnaround strategy. Businesses fail because they don’t serve. Individuals too.” It’s easy to blame the bad economy or bad upbringing (or bad whatever) for our challenges making money. But, the fact is, it’s never any of those things. It’s about one thing: Our failure to serve.

Discovering how to give back into the community we live and the people we serve is what separates any business from just being ordinary. The concept of business coupled with community purpose can teach individuals great insights on leading. There are three components that drives success; Passion Mindset, Craftsman Mindset, and Servant Mindset. Cal Newport’s book So Good They Can’t Ignore You, is the basis of the three mindset categories.The key questions are questions that I have learned and ask each leader that I coach. The answers will determine the greatness of success in your life.

Passion Mindset

I think that if we want to actualize our potential (in creativity, enjoyment and wealth) we need to truly LOVE what we do. My standard? You love it so much you’d pay to do it. That’s a Passion Mindset.

Craftsman Mindset

If we want to actualize our potential (in creativity, enjoyment and wealth), we need to be ALL IN committed to mastering our craft and doing GREAT work. Enter: The Craftsman Mindset. The Key Question: What are you doing to develop yourself?

Servant Mindset

It’s not enough to Love it and strive to be Great at it, we need to find a way to share our Passion and Craft with the world. And, we need to do the often hard work of figuring out how to truly create value by giving people what they really want and are willing to pay for. Enter: The Servant Mindset. The Key Question: What are you doing to develop others?

How can you apply this information? In each category write out one action step you can do today that will improve your Passion, Craftsman, and Servant’s mindset. Go ahead – do it NOW!

Practice Patience

It will always be harder than you think and will take longer than you planned. Begin with a belief in yourself. A a rule of thumb expect 8-10 failures to one success. Develop resilience – allow for recovery time after a failure. Learn to practice patience with the process. You are asking the wrong question if you ask, “How long will this take?” You will up with destination disease which in turn leads you to compare. Comparisons kills momentum and causes you to miss out on the journey. The correct question to be asking is, “How far can I go?”

Possess Self-Discipline

Freedom is only a good thing of you are a disciplined person. Prioritize, then live by your priorities. Learn to feed your focus by diminishing your distractions.

Stay focused on high return actions. Avoid low return time wasters.Consistency of good habits compounds and provides the highest return on your investments. Remember that life comes in seasons and is never balanced. Your life cannot get into balance unless you prioritize and engage in the correct actions consistently.

Know How To Sell

Stop Selling and Start Enriching People’s Lives! Selling is about 90% people knowledge and 10% product knowledge. Only pass along what has enriched your life. Be passionate about sharing with others only what has impacted your life. Be more interested in who people are than in what you have to sell. Ask connecting questions of others. For example, What are the top three things that you are passionate about in life?

Develop Yourself Daily

Take your personal development seriously. Your growth today is the only guarantee that tomorrow will become better. Get into your optimal zone.

  • Out of your gift zone + out of your comfort zone = Catastrophe
  • In your gift zone + out of your comfort zone = Coasting
  • In your gift zone + out of your comfort Zone = Creative and Climbing

Transformation occurs when you apply growth principles to your life. You grow by doing your number one priority daily.

Learn How To Lead

The foundation of leading people is to learn to love people unconditionally, value people, and believe in people.

You create compound interest with people when you;

  • Never focus on making money, but focus on making people
  • Never focus on starting companies, but focus on starting people
  • Never focus on  growing production, but focus on growing people

Lead by example. Leadership is visual. The weight of your words is never as heavy as the weight of your actions. If we are connecting people beware of the tendency to become best friends. Focus rather on challenging people to produce. Develop greatness – do not let people remain the same.

The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements, bestselling author don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love. In the book The Four Agreements has sold over 52 million copies and is printed in 38 languages. Who are the Toltecs you might ask? Beginning in the 12th century, the invasion of the nomadic Chichimec destroyed the Toltec leadership in central Mexico. Among the invaders were the Aztecs, or Mexica, who destroyed Tollan about the mid-12th century. See also Mesoamerican civilization.

First, here they are:

1. The First Agreement: Be Impeccable with Your Word
2. The Second Agreement: Don’t Take Anything Personally
3. The Third Agreement: Don’t Make Assumptions
4. The Fourth Agreement: Always Do Your Best

Alright. Now in a little more detail.

The First Agreement: Be Impeccable with Your Word. What’s that mean? Well, Don Miguel tells us that the word “impeccable” literally means “without sin.” In this context, we’re talking about being in integrity with your highest self. To not “sin” against that best version of you. Starting with how you communicate with yourself and others.

In short: No complaining. No criticism. No blaming. No gossiping. Ever.

It’s “the most important one and also the most difficult one to honor. It is so important that with just this first agreement you will be able to transcend to the level of existence I call heaven on earth.”

The Second Agreement: Don’t Take Anything Personally. Don’t take anything personally? Yah. Don’t take anything personally. Period. Fact is, how someone responds to you often says more about THEM than it says about you.

As Ruiz says: Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.”

The Third Agreement: Don’t Make Assumptions. Want a quick way to get in trouble? Make assumptions about someone else’s behavior. Notice how often we do that. And, do we assume the best? No. We assume the worst.

Solution: “The way to keep yourself from making assumptions is to ask questions. Make sure the communication is clear. If you don’t understand, ask. Have the courage to ask questions until you are as clear as you can be.”

The Fourth Agreement: Always Do Your Best. Don Miguel tells us that it’s the Fourth Agreement that brings the prior three to life. Want to engrain your new way of being? Do your best. Moment to moment to moment.

And, remember that sometimes your best will be ridiculously awesome. And, at other times it won’t be so awesome.

But: “Under any circumstance, always do your best, no more and no less. But keep in mind that your best is never going to be the same from one moment to the next. Everything is alive and changing all the time, so your best will sometimes be high quality, and other times it will not be as good.”

Which one of these four agreements need some extra work in your life and leadership. Pick One – Let’s go out and make a difference in our world.
